2. Tea Tree Oil

tea trees

Tea Tree oil is also known as Melaleuca alternifolia. This essential oil extracted from the herb’s leaves has thousands of testimonies and research papers showing its effectiveness in killing bacteria. Its microbial properties work fast. Tea tree oil is strong so we suggest you dilute this one. Also, don’t forget to consider the size of your dog. A small dog needs less, so start slow. Although it has been reported that some dogs are allergic to tea tree oil this is rare. However, with any new treatment, it is best to start with a low dose and stay observant. Watch to see if the area looks worse. A reaction will most likely occur fast but waiting 24 hours is smart. Also, be sure to use a high quality and organic tea tree oil when possible.Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil. We like jojoba best but you can use olive oil, grapeseed oil or the fantastic coconut oil we mentioned above. With a glass dropper, place a few drops of the mixture in the ear and massage. Repeat every other day. Apply this solution at night then rinse out in the morning. After cleaning, apply straight coconut oil on the irritated area. As the dog’s ear mites die off, the ears will still feel sore from scratching. Soothing them with coconut oil will be appreciated by your pup.

4. Neem Oil

siamese neem

This oil is historic. They have used it for centuries as an all around bug killer. It is antifungal, antibacterial and anti-parasitic. The compound azadirachtin is known as a natural insecticide and used in many natural bug sprays. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that will help reduce the swelling that occurs because of ear mite bites and scratching.  The smell is odd but nothing unpleasant. You will want to dilute the neem oil in a carrier oil; a 1:10 ratio is good but don’t get hung up on a few drops. Mix the oils and heat. We like to place the oils in a small jar and place in a hot pot of water. Overheating can destroy the properties but a nice heat will stimulate the compounds and feel wonderful on your dog’s ears. Place a few drops of the mix into the canal and massage. Also, apply to the external area of the ear for added comfort and to help prevent any more mites from entering. One whiff of the neem oil and bugs will back away. Do this once a day – again, we find night time is best. Rinse the area in the morning.
